Bears Unlimited, Inc. is a bear and wildlife advocacy and conservation organization dedicated to protecting and preserving the populations, habitat, rights, and welfare of both wild and domestic animals. Bears Unlimited actively engages in backcountry research expeditions that evaluate wildlife in their natural habitat as well as urban research ventures to ensure domestic and show animals are treated fairly and humanely.

Additionally, we provide educational programs for school-aged children and are an active participant in the on-going discussion surrounding the effects of global climate change, animal welfare, and animal rights. Ultimately, Bears Unlimited seeks to advocate on the behalf of all animals and work towards preserving their natural habitats.

  • Returning Home.
I am back, well mostly, from my, and Krissy’s summer paddle on the lakes of the Colorado River. Starting on Lake Powell, in late June, we paddled for about 18 days in excessive heat, above 115F. This started a very difficult and unusual summer for the Arizona countryside.  In the early part of the summer it was just, HOT. In Phoenix, the record for days over 110F was 35, this summer 34 days over 1 ... read more

  • A return to the water
Man this summer on the water has been an odd one. As some of you know, Krissy and I paddled 300 plus miles in late June and early July on Lake Powell. When the temps were supposed to be in the high 90’s to low 100’s. We suffered through a constant barrage of 110F and above for just about all the time we were out. Krissy was hot most of the time as was I. At some point I knew she could be injured b ... read more

  • Colorado River Pirate Cruise
Colorado River Pirate Cruise; From Lake Powell to Lake Havasu. Planning, then re-planning and adjusting and adapting another new updated plan seem to be fairly complete. I have noticed as I have gotten older, the expeditions are as difficult but it takes more time to plan for these trips. This expedition is quite complex as it is long and grueling. It is also new to me in many areas of pl ... read more

  • Black and Brown; There is a Difference!
Bears, the browns ones and the black ones seem to have a life of their own to many that have observed them. But like any species they are the same and different at the same time. We humans, as a species, seem to misunderstand bears and give them qualities and behaviors that they either do not have or that are completely misunderstand. These two non-maritime bears of North America are fascina ... read more

  • Bears are waking up, again.
Guess what time of the year it is? First month of baseball, hockey and basketball playoffs and of course, NFL draft! While these are important, for sure, the most important is, bear season begins in many areas. The blacks and browns are waking up in the northern climes. Most blacks in the Appalachian east are waking up too. My brother black bears in Florida and the Gulf of Mexico never seem to sle ... read more
